End of the Mayan Calendar

As 21 December 2012 looms closer, the day that is to be the end of order on earth approaches.  I have wondered just how many people had thoughts that there may be some truth in the prediction.  No matter how fleeting the thought, I'd bet a great many more than are going to admit it.

All the doomsday preppers are ready.  So are they all wrong about December 21st?  I hope so or my daughter-in-law is going to have a lousy birthday.

My feelings are no on the 21st and I get a piece of cake, but a real maybe to other problems.

This year the Midwest is suffering one of the worst droughts in history.  Barge traffic on the Mississippi is slowed to an almost stop.  It has never been this low.

Farmers may have it harder to bring in crops than this past year.  Yes, we have rivers of ground water but where exactly no one seems to know, or they are not saying.

Last year farmers, God Bless them, did everything possible to produce crops.  They drilled wells hudreds of feet deep and prayed.  Some prayers were answered but only in the short term as many wells dried up.  Other prayers were put on the side and farmers watched crops dry up.

Cattle farmers did not have but a few hay puttings from fields that normally produced four or five.  No Rain.

The average person can go without food for five to seven days but only three without water.

Did you ever think how much water one person uses in a day?  How much to shower, flush a toilet, make coffee, make meals, wash clothes, etc.  Gallons for just one person.

I have a well but it isn't going to last forever.  I have a forty gallon hot water heater that will last, at best, a month.  The hot tub has several thousand gallons and the pond has some, but eventually the water will run out.  How much can a person store?

That is just for drinking.

What stores of food do you have?  For how long?

Do you have medications?

Much of our electricity is from hydro-powered plants.  Coal powered is being fazed out and nuclear generated takes years to bring on line.

If you do have food and water, how are you going to cook it?  How are you going to heat your home?  This past summer was one of the hottest on record.  How are you to stay cool?

My last thought on this matter is only a reminder:

Toilet paper.

Enough said.
